TalentTracks: Building a Culture of Innovation

Our all-leader Triannual workshops this year are guiding us to exploire each of the four focuses of a leader: resilience, engagement, experience, and innovation.

At Triannual III on November 14-15th will dive deeper into our fourth focus of innovation and how we can flip the switch to view our roles through an innovation lens.

Our TalentTracks leadership training hub offers a short course on nurturing an innovative culture that will help lay the foundation for our work in November.

This 30-minute course will lead us through innovation through experimentation, innovation and risk management, rapid execution of innovation and attracting innovators by nurturing and committing to innovation.

KEY LESSONS FROM THE COURSE:

-Organizations that can’t innovate have a tough time competing, but innovation does not happen by chance. Leaders have to create a culture of innovation.

-What does it take to be an innovation leader? Like Steve Jobs, you’ve got to be willing to take risks, manage them, calculate them, and inspire people to focus on a goal. You need to be almost obsessed by what your’e trying to achieve.

-Everyone in the company from top to bottom has to be focused on innovation. If you have a deep culture of innovation, ideas can and should come from any level in the organization. If you build a culture of innovation, ideas can flow from anywhere and that can help make you truly competitive.

-Innovation doesn’t just happen, it’s the result of a commitment by the organization. It has to be a stated priority and when it is, it excites and inspires people.

-It’s all about how much you care about what you do. When you care, you want to make it better. You look for new ways of doing things, new ways of delighting customers or helping people. That’s what fires innovative ideas.

Leader-to-Leader Tools for Effective 1:1s

One way to build an innovative culture at Trinity Health is to leverage 1:1s with your leader to improve in each of the four focuses using the Leader-to-Leader Agenda and Update tools.

September’s Leader-to-Leader pages are located on page 120 of your FY2023 Planner.

LEADER-TO-LEADER UPDATE – Preparing for your 1:1
The Leader-to-Leader Update tool found on page 120 is what you’ll use to prepare for your monthly 1:1 with your leader.

The tool will help you work through key projects and goals in each focus area and share where you most you most need support from your leader going forward.

LEADER-TO-LEADER AGENDA – Leading a 1:1
Your leader will use the Leader-to-Leader Agenda on page 121 to facilitate your monthly meeting and if your direct reports are also leaders you will use the Leader-to-Leader Agenda to facilitate their 1:1

Burning Ideas

Another aspect of nurturing a culture of innovation is releasing what no longer serves us and phasing out processes and procedures that need to be improved.

In Triannual I, in our deep dive into Alignment, Jennifer spoke about the need to BURN AWAY what doesn’t serve us, our team, or the mission of Trinity Health in order to make way for growing what will serve us best going forward.

Take your burning ideas to your Leader-to-Leader 1:1 to work out how you can burn down certain tasks to make necessary improvements and prevent YOU from burning out!

Four Ways to “Burn” Tasks from Your To-Do List:

*DELETE – remove from your schedule altogether
*DELEGATE – pass on to another teammate who may be more suited to the task
*DEFER – postpone to another time
*DO – complete and clear from your calendar with just a few minutes of time
