REPLAY: Critical Conversations Roundtable

This past Tuesday, August 23rd, Human Resources Expert Kathleen Lapekas, PHR, SHRM-CP gave us a fantastic framework and helpful tools for Having Difficult Conversations and Giving Delicate Feedback.

Approaching our employees around behaviors that need addressed is never easy, but Kathleen’s frameworks and tools give us a roadmap to approach these difficult conversations in a way that helps us achieve the desired result and maintain a strong relationship with our employee.

She gave a few great examples of exactly how to walk through the conversation from start to finish and provided a great resource we can keep on hand to approach our next difficult conversation when it arises.

Key Tenants of Having Difficult Conversations and Giving Delicate Feedback

Here are key highlights from Kathleen’s talk on critical conversations:

-Giving meaningful, effective feedback is the most powerful tool we have to fix interpersonal problems and it is the fastest way to help someone improve their performance

Feedback can be both positive AND negative and BOTH high performers and those who are underperforming or having issues need feedback from their leaders

-To be effective, feedback must be specific, describing what you saw and why it matters

-When correcting a teammate, we need to take three steps: 1) identify the problem, 2) state why it matters, 3) tell them what you want them to do differently

-“I’ve noticed” are two powerfully effective words to begin our feedback and will help it be better received
